Code on international mobile roaming to be developed

The international mobile roaming working party has started work on developing a self-regulated code for the information that should be provided to customers about international mobile roaming.

The purpose of the code is to make sure that consumers are given the information about international roaming costs and options they need to prevent “bill shock” when they return to New Zealand. However, the code will not cover pricing and pricing transparency.

The working party has established a project scope and timetable for developing the code and preparing a report on initiatives that could be adopted to raise public awareness about alternatives to roaming, and to help consumers make price comparisons.

The working party will look at the approaches adopted in other countries – particularly Australia – to help develop the code.

Members of the working party are: Vodafone, Telecom. Telstra Clear, 2Degrees and representatives from Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs). Representatives from the Telecommunications Users Association (TUANZ), the Ministry for Economic Development and the Commerce Commission will also help develop the code.

The TCF has also made a submission on a discussion document on trans-Tasman mobile roaming released by Telecommunications Minister Steven Joyce in May.  View the TCF submission on trans-Tasman mobile roaming.
